Craters of the Moon
We left Clayton and Stanley, Idaho and traveled to Arco, Idaho to see the Craters of the Moon. We traveled through some
beautiful country to get to Arco. I cannot believe how pretty Idaho
is, especially the northern part. The
southern part is also pretty but they have a lot of potato fields around. Arco is not a very big town with only two
restaurants, one Mexican and the other was a hamburger joint. It was good and greasy, which I needed. Of course, we had to go to Mexican the next
night and that was ok except for the human hair they put in my food.
Craters of the Moon National
Park is really something to see. There
is not a lot of information or recognition for the park, but it is interesting
to see and find how all that lava got to the area millions of years
ago. The stuff is everywhere and there
are lava tubes that came to the surface and bust to make caves and
tunnels. The park is huge and there is
not much growing around there. The park
has done some work to make it visitor friendly and there are paths that you
walk around on to see some of the more interesting things. Little known fact is that 1/3 of Idaho is a lava bed from millions of years ago.
Back in 69, Astronauts
came here to train for the Moon Mission for NASA. There is not much information on how they
trained or what they did here to get ready, but the brochures make mention of
it.
They have a nice visitors
center and a campground at the entrance.
We met one of the Rangers at the park and she had a Georgia
connection. She attended “UGA to get her
PHD. We talked for a while and she gave
us a lot of information of places to go and see on the rest of our trip. Here is the photos of the lava.
