Big Bend National Park May 13th

Big Bend National Park

We arrived here yesterday, May 12, 2017.  Cindy was tired and did not want to eat at the RV, but instead wanted to go out to an authentic Mexican restaurant.  We asked the lady checking us in and she suggested two different places to eat Mexican.  One was Rio Bravo and another Las Kiva.  Cindy wanted to go to Rio Bravo, so off we headed.  Got there and they were supposed to open at 6 pm and it was 545 when we arrived.  It was not even any cars in the parking lot, employees or customers.  There was a notice of a water boiling restriction on the door.  So, Cindy now did not want to eat there.  She wanted to go to Las Kiva because she saw a lot of cars there and assumed it would be Mexican and GOOD.  We went and there was not the first thing on the menu Mexican.  For this area, I guess the place was ok.  You had to walk down stairs to get in and the place was mostly underground.  It was cool though inside and I mean temp wise.  The food was ok but not great.  I gave her heck about picking the restaurant.
Today, we went to Big Bend National Park and toured part of the park on the west side.  Tomorrow we will go see the other half on the east side.  The park is big with 880,000 acres.  Drives to get to some areas (Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive) we went to was 30 miles there and 30 miles back.  Then you had to turn and go 10, 15, 25 miles to the other sites like, Chisos Basin.  That is why it takes about two days to see it all. We dove about 200 miles today.   But the park is beautiful and we got to see some wild life, the Rio Grande, Santa Elena Canon overlook.  This is as close as you can get to the Mexican border, except at the Santa Elena Canyon trail where you can go stand in the Rio Grande and have one foot in the US and one in Mexico.  The water has different heights at different times of the year and there is a drought going on now.  So, we could stand in the dry part of the Rio Grande. For a while, Cindy was an illegal alien in Mexico.   She broke the law and entered illegally.  If that was not bad enough she then picked up a river rock and carried it out of the park.  I believe I will have to turn her in after the trip is over.

The above photos are of the RV
park where we are staying.

This is an old piece of mining equipment left over after the mines quit operating about 1942.  They mined mercury here and at other cities never this location.

This is an old wagon left over from when the Army occupied this area during 1916 until 1920.  They built a fort here because the Mexicans were acting up and they wanted to protect the US and make sure the fighting did not spill over into the United States

This is the Santa Elena canyon and the Rio Grande.  Meciao is to the left and the US to the right in the photo.

Cindy is actually standing in the the Rio Grande and the borders of Mexico and the US.  I believe she entered Mexico illegally!!

We had a great day in the park and we carried our lunch and had a picnic in the truck on Sotol Vista.  We saw Roadrunners and Coyotes some horses (not sure if they were wild).  Looking forward to tomorrows adventures.
