Texas State Capital and 6th Street Adventure

Today we traveled from Austin to Fort Stockton, Texas.  Took about five hours but a lot of that was getting out of Austin.  It was fun but glad to be back on the road again.

Yesterday we went to the Texas State Capital and took a tour.  As usual Cindy was packing and we stopped to ask a State Trooper who was guarding the front gate if they had a medal detector and of course they did so we asked if we could get in the Capital with her gun.  He told us to see the Trooper inside and tell him she was a retired officer and show ID and they would let us in.  So we go to the Trooper and she tells him she is a retired officer and he said sure darling you can come in with your weapon.  He then looked at me and asked if I was a retired officer and I said no.  He said well you will have to go through the other door.  Heck, I got over there and they searched everything and I thought they were going to strip search me before I could go inside.  But Miss Cindy could march right on in.  God forbid if they knew her like I do they would not have let her within a 100 miles of the Capital much less right around the corner from the Governor's Office.

We took a tour  of the Capital which was interesting and they had a wall of the Medal of Honor winners from the state of Texas and Audie Murphy was listed there.  I was pleased to see it.  He was the most decorated  serviceman in WWII.

So here is the Capital.  It was built in the 1800's and was restored once.  I forgot the date.  It is made of granite which was from Texas and was mined somewhere out side of Austin.

This is the floor outside in a garden area where people go to smoke.  It is a replica of the one on the inside  as you walk into the Capital.

This is the wall around the garden area and offices are located so the occupants can see into the garden.

This is the floor looking down from the 3rd floor.  You can see two people at the top near the word Texas

Oh, Here is the Capital and grounds.  The following photos show the different statutes and other designs surrounding the grounds.

This is the top of the Capital that I mentioned above.  It is the same design but on the top of the ceiling inside of the 1st floor.

This is located on the left side of the Capital grounds and
Yes it is Cows and a Cowboys.  This is Texas.

After we finished at the Capital building we went to eat at Frank's (it is a hot dog joint and Cindy had to have a hotdog for lunch).  They were ok but I have had better at Eastis table!!

After eating lunch we walked down to 6th street which is like being on Bourbon Street.  Well known is the city of Austin and is a tourists attraction of sorts.  There is a great old hotel there called the Driskill.

There are all kinds of restaurants and bars with live music for your entertainment.  We walked up and down the street and then Cindy had seen enough and wanted to go back to the RV and rest.  Probably a good idea since we had to leave early the next morning.  But here are a few more photos of the area.

These are photos of the river that run through Austin.  There are a lot of canoes and kayaks on the river even during the work day.

Here are a few photos of the Pecan Grove RV Park where we stayed.  It was a tight fit and we had to back it in,  but we were able to get into the site and it was next to the office and street so it was good.
