White Sands National Monument

We arrived in Las Cruces on Tuesday May 16, 2017 and went to the store and replenished our supplies and went to eat Mexican food again!  The lady at the RV park recommended a place and it was good.  The building was nothing to brag about but the food was good.  We came back to the RV and crashed because moving day is hard and you have to get up early and the driving is tiring and these roads were not in the best of shape through parts of Texas near the border.
Wednesday we went to White Sands National Monument and Cindy played in the Gypsum, which is referred to as sand,  but it is not, it is a mineral.  We apparently eat a lot of the stuff in our food and spices, and toothpaste.
You would think the Gypsum would be hot in the sun such as sand is but it is not, its cool to the feet when walking in it during the hot weather.  The deeper you sink into the Gypsum the colder it gets.  The visitor center rents sleds that you can use to slide down the mounds of dunes.  It seems that it would be easy to go down but it is not.  You have to wax the sled and then find some soft Gypsum to slide down because the hard stuff does not let the sleds go down so easy.

Cindy rented a sled and slid down the largest dune we could find.  It was not fast but she seemed to enjoy it and went down a couple of times.

After the visit to White Sands Monument we went to the White Sands missile site to see the museum but it was closed and they turned us around at the military gate.  This is where they test the missiles.  These are the smaller missiles you see on the ships and some planes.  Not to be confused with the ones for space, although some of those were tested here as well from what I have read.

So it was closed and we decided that we wanted to go wine tasting and Cindy of course had already looked up winerys and we went to one in the city of Las Cruces.  It was good I guess because she bought a lot of it.  Gifts for Christmas. Yea!!  We went back to the RV and cooked and hit the sack early.

Here are a few other photos that were made in White Sands.
