Snowfall, Big Trees and Good Lunch

We traveled back to the Sequoia National Park today to see if we could see more of the trees without the fog.  We got to the entrance and found out that there was snow on the roads and mountains and some areas were closed.  The Ranger said that we could go about 6 miles into the park before we had to stop.  We decided to go the 6 miles and wait for the road to clear.  We had to wait about half an hour and then we could go but it was already 10:00 AM by this time.  Was not sure that we could make it through everything before dark, but we did it.  The trees are huge as you would expect.  I have tried to give some reference points such as people, car or other objects so that you could see how big they are.  We got to the top and it was cold and freezing.  We had to put on sweat shirts and two jackets that we had brought with us to stay warm.   As you will notice there is still snow everywhere but the roads were clear.  There is no parking where the Sherman tree is located and you have to go passed it and park and you have the option to ride a shuttle back to the tree or walk about a half mile to the tree and walk back or ride the shuttle.  We decided to walk down to the tree since it was down hill and not walk back up but instead ride the shuttle back.  The morning was pretty but the afternoon the cloud returned (see the bottom picture) but we were lucky in that we had seen everything we wanted to see in the area and were moving to the General Grant Grove of trees and the Grant Tree, which is at a different elevation.

We took a picnic lunch which Cindy made with us and it was the best baloney and cheese I have ever had.  We had to eat in the truck because I did not want to freeze my butt off sitting in the snow covered benches and table that were available.

We returned a different route which was suppose to be a straight road and easier to get off the mountain.  We found this not to be true.  There were more curves on this road than Needles Highway  which had about 120 or more curves in it.  It took longer to get down but we saw a different part of the country and we also got to stop at a fruit stand and get some fruit.  This part of California is loaded with orange trees, lemon trees, plums and a whole bunch of other stuff.

This is what the clouds looked like when we stopped for lunch
