Charles Manson's Former Home, Castle Rock and Point St. George

We discovered that there is a prison here in Fort Dick (Pelican Bay State Prison), which is about 10 miles from where we are camped.  It houses some of California's most dangerous criminals including Charles Manson.  As we were traveling around the city we ran upon the location of the prison, which is not broadcasted  any where in the information on Crescent City or anywhere else that we could find.  The only way we found out about it was from a local that we befriended and he told us about it.  When they built the prison no other city in California wanted the facility built in their backyard but Crescent City wanted the money and jobs it would provide and agreed to have it here.  We observed that it was well guarded with a guard station right at the road so no one could drive into the prison without going through and being checked by the guards to make sure you were supposed to be there.  Some Prisons that I am familiar with let you drive in and park before being checked.  We gave Charles the one finger salute as we slowed down to go by but not sure he got the message.  He may not even be here now not sure about that either. (Found out later that Charlie is now at Central Valley Prison so I guess the salute will have to be forwarded.)  Another prisoner, Damian Williams, was housed here but has been transferred to another prison.  He was the one who beat Reginald Denny during the 1992 LA Riots.  He was sentenced for only a few months for the Denny beating but got out and in 2003 committed murder on a drug dealer and was sentenced to 42 years to life for that crime. It's OK to beat a white man almost to death, but don't kill a brother. (Cindy's remarks)

Anyway we went to Castle Rock and observed more Sea Lions laying around being lazy.  If you view the photos it is the rock with the trees growing on top.  After that we went to the Anchor Way where there were more Sea Lions laying around and we also had a very expensive lunch at the Charter House.  Nothing in California is cheap!!!

After lunch we visited Crescent Beach overlook which was foggy the last time we tried to visit.  The view of the beach and other areas is great from this elevation.  The photos do not do it justice.  We then made our last trip to the Redwoods at Simpson-Reed Grove off Walker Road which is about a mile and half from the RV campground.  These trees and the grove are beautiful in the afternoon with the evening sun coming in.
